While Taking Tea In Tiki Cups

I think I’ll take a trip to town
And do some walkin’ up and down
Then pester people I don’t know
So they can tell me where to go!

But I’ll be laughing loud and long
When I begin my Broadway song
To show the suits how silky cool
A man can be though he’s a fool.

I know I am a crazy man
Who’s got a problem with his plan –
But what the hey, I’m here today,
Though I am strange in every way.

I have my downs and then my ups
While taking tea in tiki cups,
Along with just a touch of gin –
That’s how I get the genie in.

Excuse me, sir, I want a coin,
There is this club I need to join
And then they’ll read my poetry;
But now just goose-eggs read for me.

But maybe they think they’re too good
For me and my old neighborhood;
And if that’s true, it’s cool with me;
I’ve published poems at sixty-three.

Oh please don’t leave, you’ll make me grieve,
Just name your God and I’ll believe.
I need the money more than you,
I’m loosy-goosy screw by screw.

That’s right, I’m nuts, I do admit,
But that’s my life, or part of it.
So fork it over if you can
And then I’ll buy a “brand new plan.”

I’ll slip down South to bright blue skies
And spend my time just swattin’ flies.
That’s where we older people thirve,
At least as long as we’re alive.

Miami has diversity,
Though crime is their commodity
But one thin dime makes crime alright
For one old man most every night.

And then I’ll walk back to my house
To find that fuzzy little mouse
That keeps on scratching in my wall
And stays there even when I call.

I know I seem to ramble on,
But all my people now are gone.
These things can happen at my age;
I guess it’s time to turn the page.

And when the final chapter’s found
It says I’ll soon be under ground
But I won’t take up too much space,
I’m looking forward to the place.
