FIELDTRIP MEMORIES OF A RAILFAN
From Flemingville we headed south
Through Pennsylvania to the mouth
Of a demo coal mine
In Ashland in time
To ride their steam train, pulling out.
Then back for a trip underground
Where coal miners used to be found,
Or at least what they said…
Low rocks—watch your head…
The electric loco had real sound!
Went next out to Wannamaker
Kempton and Southern to take her,
Standard gauged real steam…
Hear its whistle scream,
Her ash pan needs a fireman to rake her.
We headed back home that night
Real tired, excited in spite
Of extremely long drives
For interesting lives
On the weekends, our prospects were bright.
Our Flemingville, New York, wee train
Would soon be a-running again…
But our steamer was small
To pull much at all,
Especially out on the main!
