Another bard I do acquaint

From a library discard, condition faint,

Brings me an artist Southern-trod…

The poet, Henry Timrod.

This tome from eighteen ninety-nine

Is fragile—yes—but reads just fine,

Though parts of pages disintegrate….

Our poetry shares common traits.

I read the story of  his youth,

Our similarities are in truth

Guides to our similar styles…

Lyrical form, no hidden wiles.

I read “Katie” ’bout his English belle…

My namesake too, had one, folks tell,

His Katie born of English stock

Helped him avoid writer’s block.

Another bard I do declare,

I’ve found a kindred spirit there…

Although the man has been long dead,

He certainly was well-read!
