CHEWING LIKE DAD
When older, chewing surface is less,
I’ll be like my Dad, I guess…
He could barely eat salad
But enjoyment was valid,
Even though he made quite a mess.
–
Like Dad was, my teeth are fewer,
Eating spiedies* right off the skewer…
Can enjoy popcorn,
With the hulls I have borne
But someday I’ll have dentures for sure.
—Jonathan Caswell
NOTE*: “Spiedies” are marinated meat chunks, generally lamb or beef, cooked on a metal skewer over a charcoal fire without vegetables (cooked separately). A regional favorite of the Binghamton, NY, area, where the author grew up.
