NAMING RAILROAD LOCOMOTIVES

THE NAMING OF

RAILROAD LOCOMOTIVES

In South Africa, engineers

Kept nameplates honoring their dears…

A wife or a daughter

On an engine thus altered

Temporarily, not officially cleared.

The practice of naming for wife

Or daughter in a railroad life…

Came from the time

When engines on line,

Were assigned a crew for its life.

Spit polished domes were common,

Decorated like the Temple of Solomon…

On special occasions

Like a train for the Masons,

Or for any other special train run!

Locomotive naming rights

No longer engineer’s lights…

Frequently are

By corporate, for a star,

Or somebody whose achievements were just right.

Naming locomotives in America is rare,

But it happens on lines here and there…

For a favorite railroad fan

Or a president’s life span,

Or a city whose spirit the railroad wants to share.

Winston Churchill is a favorite bloke,

His career weathered battles and smoke…

In British eyes

He kept his islands alive,

The British Lion on which the Nazis choked!
