The residents are called, “Hoosiers.”
Hoosier means “anything large”
The nickname is the “Hoosier State
In untamed land they soon took charge.

An Indian word is this state’s name
and it means “Land of the Indians’.
Motto is, “Crossroads to America”
For the westward bound Americans.

On May 4, 1871 in Fort Wayne, the first
professional baseball game was played.
In Historic Park County and still standing are,
32 Covered Bridges since they first have been made.

In Crawfordsville, the first of 18 Rotary jails and
is the only one still operating from them all.
And in 1914 Marcella Gruelle of Indianapolis
created the very first Raggedy Ann Doll.

At one time there was 12 different stage coach
Lines that had a scheduled run.
And in 1862, Richard Gaitling of Indianapolis
invented what was named the Gaitling gun.

From 1900 to 1920, over 200 makes of cars
That were designed and made within this state.
Like Duesenbergs and Auburns, Stutzes
and Maxwells, a few I will relate.

The man made East Race Waterways

The only man made in the nation.

And in Fort Wayne, Syvanus F Bower

Designed the first gasoline pump station.

The state bird is the Cardinal

As pretty as can be.

The peony is the flower

And the state tree is the Tulip tree.

Santa Claus, Indiana receives over

One and a half million letters a year.

For every letter written

Every word enclosed is most sincere.

Names again like Redenbacher and Col. Sanders

Dillinger and Hoffa, Jackson and McQueen.

Everett, Fraser, Jones and Letterman

Quayle, McCoy and Williamson to end we have James Dean.

Statehood, December 11, 1816 the 19th state

Capital is Indianapolis
