Right in the heart of the Appalachian Highlands
It is nicknamed~~ The Mountain State.
Peace treaties forced the Cherokee and
Iroquois out of West Virginia in 1768.

The residents are called~~ West Virginians.
The motto is~~ “Mountaineers are always free.”
The official state bird is the cardinal
And the sugar maple is the state tree.

Bailey Brown, the first Union soldier
Killed in the Civil War.
And Chester Merriman of Romney
Fought in World War 1~~ his age ten plus four!

The state flower is the rhododendron
And the official animal is the black bear.
Nearly 75% of the state is forest and the
State gem is the fossil coral that is found there.

In WebsterSprings is the world’s
Largest Sycamore tree that is displayed.
And in Charleston in 1870 the first
Brick street in the world was laid.

The longest steel arch bridge in the world
Once a year it is closed for celebration.
The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville
Is the second highest steel arch in the nation.

At seven-teen hundred feet across and
Eight hundred and seventy-six straight down.
The road is closed for Bridge Day as one-hundred
Thousand people converge on this small town.

It is West Virginia’s largest day event
From sun up until sun down.
As they parachute and bungee jump
From the bridge down to the ground.

George Brett, Jerry West and Kathy Mattea
Chuck Yeager and a few more that we got.
Mary Lou Retton and Stonewall Jackson
Pearl Buck and the lovable Don Knotts.

Statehood, June 20, 1863 the 35th state
Capital is Charleston

AUTHOR NOTES:
The first federal prison exclusively for women in the United States was opened in 1926 in West Virginia.
The first brick street in the world was laid in Charleston, West Virginia, on October 23, 1870, on Summers Street, between Kanawha and Virginia Streets. The longest block in the world is the 1500 block of Virginia Street. Because of its mountains, West Virginia is sometimes referred to as “the Switzerland of the United States”. West Virginia is the second-largest coal producing state in the country. West Virginia has long been famous for its manufacture of fine glass. A small population of Cherokee, Delaware and Shawnee Indian tribes lived in the West Virginia region when European explorers arrived in the area. Many of the Native Americans had died in tribal wars or disease during the late 1500s.
In 1768, peace treaties forced Cherokee and Iroquois out of West Virginia. Colonists rushed to settle the land between the Alleghenies and the Ohio River. The Alleghenies Mountains separated the western and eastern counties of Virginia, which soon became very different in social and economic structure.
West Virginia was a part of Virginia until that state seceded from the United States in 1861; delegates from 40 counties formed their own government, and statehood was granted them two years later. West Virginia is the only state in the Union to have acquired its sovereignty by proclamation of the President of the United States.
