ALABAMA

In alphabetical order,
this is the first state that we find.
Yellowhammer is the state bird
The tree, is the southern longleaf pine.

Alabama became a state
At the end of Confederacy
First capital was Cahaba
Today it is Montgomery.

This land where once the Indians,
Called home for many years.
Forced to move to Oklahoma
They took, “The trail of tears.”

The state song is “Alabama.”
Motto; “We dare defend our rights!”
So, let’s move on to a few facts
And very interesting sights.

His name was Dr. Luther Hill
Performed the first heart surgery.
The year was nineteen hundred~ two
The city was Montgomery.

Two baseball legends that people say,
Gave their all when they did play.
First Hank Aaron, then Willie Mays
The best in baseball in their day.

The world’s first electric trolley
Was built in eighteen eighty six.
And the leading Aerospace center
Defective parts they will fix.

All major natural resources
The only state where they are found.
For the making of iron or steel
Can be taken from this ground.

Remains of prehistoric man
Were discovered in Russell Cave.
The Civil War was started here
John Browns body lies in a grave.

In closing a few famous names
Must be mentioned before I’m done
Helen Keller, one strong woman
And also Booker T. Washington.

At the Battle of Mobile Bay Admiral David Farragut issued his famous command, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
The event occurred on August 5, 1864
General Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Indians in 1814. Following the event the Native Americans ceded nearly half
the present state land to the United States.
The Florence Renaissance Faire is the Alabama’s official fair.
The word Alabama means tribal town in the Creek Indian language.
The United States Army Chemical Corps Museum in Fort McClellan contains over 4000 chemical warfare artifacts.
Alabama introduced the Mardi Gras to the western world. The celebration is held on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent
begins.
