old_man_falls

(A second poem, freshly conceived today, in dedication to New Hampshire’s beloved Old Man of the Mountain.)

you must understand my despondence
more than ten thousand years I stood guard
since the last glacier sculpted my post
lifting me up to grand vista
investing in me poignant task
overseeing my family of man
across panorama of time

I marveled at you and your progress
from cave to the moon and beyond
from clan to great civilization
but my granite heart cracked at some point
bleeding sadness that reddened my eyes
to see ingenuity drag you
from stone club to weaponry aimed
at virtual global destruction

I just couldn’t watch anymore
disappointment so weighed on my stones
that I took a step forward and leaped
crashing down through Franconia Notch
as you gasped to see my poor head roll
through the flowered green promise of spring
finding rest at your foolish…
