Caesar’s Month

Poesy plus Polemics

Julius Caesar Crossing the Rubicon Illustration from wikispaces.com Julius Caesar Crossing the Rubicon
Illustration from wikispaces.com
enter July
through banner-rolled straws
piercing lemonade skins
sweet to the touch
summer still in her youth
prances maple to steeple
blushing her plums
at the pick-your-own tourists
while bumble bees harass
fried chicken hampers
and the mandibled mantis
king of the twigs
gives his rapturous head
to the queen

did you notice or miss this day
napping in shade
of imperium
did you realize you crossed
the half calendar mark
cast your die in the Rubicon
leaving more seasons
behind than ahead
Rome awaits
your awakening
cloaking its knives
