Poesy plus Polemics

"Rainy Day Street with Four Houses" Painting by Ralph Avery From “Rainy Day Street with Four Houses”
Painting by Ralph Avery

Monday in summer
mundane and repetitive
gray ceiling cloudbanks
press the air damply
much like gray Mondays
in fall, spring and winter
starting up more
dull purposeless weeks
full of expletives
cursing the silence of motion
that stills me
grounded on cushions
that soften but never
eliminate pain

my windows and flatscreen
bring me the world
I once strode like colossus
except that it’s different
at distance more angry
more perilous
wanting my fists once again
in the good fight
to punch it and pound it
back into submission
back into the safer and kinder
place men so enjoyed
when the sun shined on Mondays

but my fists are now fingertips
punches now keyboard taps
fighting to speak
in my immobile voice
through the blogosphere
pounding out odd bits
of make-believe poetry
trying to penetrate even the clouds
