the first time

I woke up to New England air

I pulled great gulping draughts

into jaded New Jerseyan lungs

tasting the difference of mornings

comparing the hundreds of places

I slept on four continents

nowhere was sweeter

or fresher or cleaner than

here in these luscious green

forested mountains

who took up my gratified exhale

and turned it back into

new growth that will burgeon across

all my flourishing acres before

comes that morning when

I breathe their scent
