Poesy plus Polemics

I went for a swim
and disappeared into my name
when my highly paid lifeguard
denied me permission
to come back ashore

so I live in the sea
no longer in sight of my footprints
swimming with ancestors
creatures whose features
bizarre and exotic
are nonetheless normal
and yet
they refuse to believe me
when telling of once having
arms, legs and lungs

the seabirds inform me
that those back on land
think my name when they see it
is merely Italian for fish

that saddens me but
I resolve to swim onward
because it’s impossible
ever to cry underwater
