clarity neglects me
doesn’t care that my
windows are melting
insults all I’ve done in
the name of precision
statistical calculus sharp
as a diamond point
accurate risk probabilities
rendered without cold
computers with pencil
and slide rule and
gray matter numbers
that never cast shadows
stood drenched in their
unmistakable truth now
I can’t tell the words
from the numbers all
senselessly streaked
brainless blurs behind
dripping glass eyes of
a mind who’s forgotten
the process of focus
can’t find the safe path
through confusion the
jungle of abstract ideas
overgrowing concealing
true edges real lines
be they ugly or pretty
not impressions but
faithful expressions of
timeless if timeworn
emotions if only the
words could emerge
recognizably whole
from the wrinkles and
folds of my brainskin
opaque with my dotage
