(repost of an earlier piece)
where is the march music
tall men once played
in bandstands upon the green
the red, white and blue bunting
that festooned the porch rails
the hand painted signs
announcing the pennies
for fresh sarsaparilla
and pink cotton candy
where is the balloon vendor
tables of pie judges
straw hats with ribbons
ladies in demure dresses
the lawn chairs arrayed
in casual clusters
men in seersucker suits
and tapping their mugs
to barbershop harmony
where are the flags
that proudly lined Main Street
and fluttered against
clear blue innocent skies
toddlers and puppies
both played free of leash
and unafraid parents
absorbed in the reverie
of an American day
where did it all go
I could swear I was there
only yesterday
