eighteen thousand tons
commanded all seven seas
a century past

retributive steel
could level coastal harbors
sink any foe’s fleet

mighty twelve-inch guns
braced five pair-mounted turrets
twenty smalls down low

it fathered the class
we called battleships back when
Pearl Harbor was new
