Desert Rain~by Julie Heckman

Desert Rain

Between my finger and my thumb
the hot desert sun spreads through
my window, a clean grating sound as
the wind blows. This sound of wind
usually gone when only the sun is present.
We spend our days waiting for rare tears
to fill the dry, sharp desert land.
Bring us the cold smell of rain, the
smother and slap of soggy sand.
Awaken roots this winter for more
desert flowers will blossom in early
spring when water is somewhere
to be found.
