‘Islands of Dreams’~by Mary Cecil

‘Islands of Dreams’

I am an island,
Adrift in hopes and dreams
With waves of aloneness,
Lapping on my shores

And if in quiet nights,
Yielding to solitude’s entreaties
As my thoughts meander,
I am lost in remembrance

To the days of joyful abandonment,
Those high,high sweet dreams
Of careless youth and glory,
Those interludes of madness

All careless,reckless indifference,
To life’s chastening storms
That would be flung,
Unexpected and unseen

To grasp my spirit and wrench,
The fleeting freedom from my soul
And lay waste my heart,
That idyllic dream we shared

Until now in the long winter’s cold,
As I surrender to retreating tides
My heart still lingers,
Where wild waves flowed.
