Mercantile Nation

Poesy plus Polemics

we have become
what we never once were

we no longer make
what we used to consume

we sell to ourselves
what others now make

we consume ever new things
we cannot afford

we borrow from those
who make what we buy

we owe them more now than
we can ever repay

we now sadly embody
Napoleon’s dénigrement
a mere nation of shopkeepers
Bourgeoisie linchpin
of capitalism
no longer possessed of
the means of production

we are slipping to
second tier even to third
in millennial rankings
of nations’ achievements
and costs will be dear
as America’s children
step into the future
