Trompe L’Oeil

Poesy plus Polemics

"Castle of Illusion" Digital Art by Irvine Peacock From “Castle of Illusion”
Digital Art by Irvine Peacock

matters of fact
are at best probabilities
such are limits of language
that truth as we think it
is ever bewildered
intransigent flaws
shadow intellect
knowledge though princely
will never accede to the throne

in our hubris we
know-nothing creatures
pretend to our wisdom
fools in the mirror
of self-exaltation
players of Wittgenstein’s game
fallen out of the habit
of simply believing
the difference between
smart and arrogant
draws from ineffable
pools of humility

words are just words
quantum amoral elements
pulled through an informal
sociable rule set
the personal stuff of
adhesive ideas
turning labyrinth pathways
emerging imperfect
but nonetheless useful
so long as we don’t invest
tongues with false
powers of certainty

for spoken words
may fool the ear
on its lazy occasions
but written words
ever and always
play fool with the eye
