Monday!!! as we continue our journey across America ( in alpha order) with the help of poetry  we will visit today the great state of:



It is called the Garden State and
The motto is “Liberty and Prosperity.”
Fort Dix is named for Major John Dix
The Secretary of Treasury.

The nicknames for residents are the
New Jerseyans or the New Jerseyites.
Thomas Edison was the Wizard of Menlo Park
And also known for inventing lights!

The horse is the animal for this state
The red oak is the official tree
The bird is the Eastern Goldfinch
And the state insect is the honey bee.

The island of Jersey in the English Channel.
From which this state’s name was derived.
Atlantic City and all its streets
Is how the board game of Monopoly was devised.

In the United States, Elizabeth is the
Largest of a major seaport.
And Cape May is the most unique
And is the oldest resort.

The first dinosaur skeleton found in North
America was in Haddonfield in 1858.
Found was the Hadrosaurus which is now
The official dinosaur for the state.

New Jersey is the home to the
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island!
The Passaic river was the site for the first
Submarine ride by inventor John Holland.


Atlantic City has the longest boardwalk

In the world for shopping or for ambling.

And in 1977, the people voted yes to Legalize casino gambling.

The Popcorn Park Zoo is the only federally
Licensed zoo that treats sick,

injured and abused.

It was founded by the Humane Society in 1977,

A second chance for animals that have been rescued.


The time has come for famous names
Jerry Lewis and Paul Simon, Houston and Travolta
Jack Nicholson and Bruce Springsteen
Abbott and Costello and last is Frank Sinatra
Statehood, December 18, 1787 the 3rd state.
Capital is Trenton



The state flower is the Purple Violet; the official dance is the square dance.
In 1977, New Jersey voters approved legislation allowing legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City.
New Jersey has the largest oil containment outside the Middle East countries
New Jersey is a leading industrial state and is the largest chemical producing state in the nation.
New Jersey has a spoon museum featuring over 5,400 spoons from every state and almost every country.
Napoleon’s Bonaparte’s older brother lived in New Jersey and founded Bordentown.
There are over 90 nesting bald eagles in the State of New Jersey.
Jersey cows! They do not come from New Jersey; however they did originate in Jersey an island off the English Channel.
The light bulb, phonograph (record player), motion picture projector were invented by Thomas Edison in his Menlo Park laboratory.
New Jersey is home to the Miss America pageant held in Atlantic City
