“Toadstools”
Painting by Doug Goodale

I admire the decay
matter reduced
to raw elements
spawning mycelium
literate forest floors
bursting with fruit
poetry too must endure
deconstruction its
language unstable
rogue syntax intends
to elicit a reader
interpreted meaning
the poet as agent
provocateur serves
up inducements
from underground
pools of amorphous
ideas here and there
popping free of the
nourishing soil where
they beg to be plucked
sweet or savory bitter
or earthy is left to the
harvesting tongue
such consumer based
judgment defines what
achieves satisfaction
the process depends
on the decomposition
of author experience
fall-off of thoughts
slough of ages discrete
spores of knowledge
things learned worth
repeating and feeding
the hungriest eyes
