admire the stubborn leaves
those loyal but friable few
browned badges of autumn
refusing to fall in submission
to winter clinging to principles
tiny tenacities holding their own
against populist whipping and
tearing of winds these are
emblems still gold with
embroidered convictions
the stalwarts who promise
to stand through the blizzard
defending the paths through
a perilous season till spring
restores growth from more
confident stems and the trees
once again can collaborate
yielding a forest of freedoms
where family and faith
are no longer abjured
