she
stood the
personification
of founding ideals
this audacious grand
freeborn experiment lit
from the fuse of revolution

her
rule of law
no man above it
indelible hallmark
fundamental principle
girding this modern unique
constitutional frame of republic

our
self-rule
raison d’être
brooks no impunity
governed and governors
equally subject to same set
of laws under equal constraint

this
mother of
old Uncle Sam
his descendants
now pregnant again
she grows gravid with
newly uncertain offspring

that
uncertainty
stems from weak
hearts of poor leaders
and threatens our future
with lost indispensable trust
in exceptional forms of democracy
