Under the Spell

Poesy plus Polemics

riots of traceries
freed of their leaves
by wintery hands
fill these windows
surround this chalet
every view of the sky
silhouetted by
interlaced fingers of
sycamore maple and oak
at their prayers

massive magistrate
boughs of bull hemlock
and pine cast their
seasonal spell of authority
swooning with pride of
their towering dominance
drinking the sun with
their chlorophyll tongues
light and energy
all to themselves

I sit here each day
stilled by circumstance
never once missing
the places I’ve been
knowing here is where
I can be happy
content in my forest
serene in my trance
shed of all my
deciduous trappings
