Monday!!! time to travel on through America, next stop on our map (in alpha order) is the great state of;



The origin of this state’s name came from
The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England.
Captain John Smith in 1607 founded Jamestown
And the first English settlement for his homeland.


The state motto is~~ “Thus ever to tyrants.”
And the residents here are called Virginians.
The legend is Captain Smith loved Pocahontas
Of the Powhatan’s Native Indians.


The Tiger swallowtail butterfly is the insect
The official dog is the American fox hound.
The dogwood is both the tree and flower
And the cardinal is the state bird that’s found.


The tomb of the Unknown Soldiers is in
Arlington National Cemetery
To honor those who gave their lives for
Their country and their bravery.


Kentucky and West Virginia were formed
From sections of this state.
The 10th of the 13 original colonies
It was admitted to the union in 1788.


In Richmond at St. John’s Church
Patrick Henry spoke with his own breath.
And in his speech he said those famous words
“Give me Liberty or Give me Death.”


Virginia is the home base for the United
States Navy’s Atlantic Fleet.
The Pentagon building is in Arlington
Where decisions made are kept discreet.


The world’s largest ship builder is also
Virginia’s largest private employer in respect.
And the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is the
World’s largest bridge-tunnel complex.


For centuries on Assateague Island
Wild ponies are free to roam.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are in this state
And the first peanuts here were grown.


Once again it is time for names before we are done.
Admiral Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald and George Washington
Woodrow Wilson, Zachary Taylor and James Madison.

Virginia was the birthplace of many U.S. presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Seven Presidents are buried in Virginia: Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Tyler, Taft and Kennedy. The Blue Ridge Mountains are located in Virginia.
Union Passenger Railway was the first successful electric street railway transit agency. It was formed in 1888 at Richmond. Virginia has had 3 capital cities: Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond.
Virginia was the site of the surrenders ending the American Revolution (Yorktown) and the Civil War (Appomattox). Opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is 18 miles long and has two bridges and two mile-long tunnels. It extends over the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and connects the cities of Cape Charles and Norfolk. The nickname is ~~The Old Dominion State.
