to my late life surprise
I find myself
easily brought to tears
the remotest events
words or images
never to mind their
innocuous nature
provoke me to well up
no thoughts
just a reflexive surge
an involuntary spasm
of sadness

I don’t think that age
of itself
makes this happen
but rather an intimate
sense of infirmity
powers diminished
lost confidence
somehow incite
a depression that pools
just behind the persona
ready to leak
without warning
