"Falling Leaves" Painting by Evelina Popilian From“Falling Leaves”
Painting by Evelina Popilian

showers of delicate
red and gold vestiges
pieces of parchment
come home to the loam
foolish greenery finished
with reaching in vain
never having quite
managed to touch the
blue vivified pulsing of
woodsmoke and sky

as they dance death’s
ballet chassé down
to their forested beds
one can hear their last
prayers waft and whisper
with tender ambition
for children expected
in spring that they may
attain higher success
of contentment
