“Belisarius”
Painting by Francois-Andre Vincent
From friendsofart.net

canny general of the Byzantium
bearing full trust of Justinian
swept his bronze blades through
Sassanid hordes claiming Persia
then onward to Carthage where
Vandals would fall to his wrath
turning finally for lands of lost
Caesars to vanquish the Ostrogoth
kings in his consummate goal to
repatriate Rome to the empire
winning from scribblers of history
“Last of the Romans” his cognomen
