Chameleon in the Dark~by Norman Wilson

Chameleon in the Dark

He chose to be
What most people could not see
A chameleon slinking, quietly
In the night walking
In a breathless silence, without talking

He taps his cane
Tap, tap, tap…all sounding much the same
Tapping alone in stark of dark night
On slippery ground in pouring rain

He smells the scent of cobblestone streets
Where each edge broaches
Beneath his wet feet
As he stumbles gaspingly, within his reach
The sidewalk, as he taps softly
In his chameleon retreat

The journey of the blind man never ends
As he walks the streets as a chameleon
Just to find a way to exist and blend
Tapping gently like clacking on trolley rails
As he tap, tap, taps slinking alone
Along the chameleon’s darkest trail
