Daily missive for Friday the 22nd of April.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Friday the 22nd of April.
It is not fashionable and I am not a little Englander but fancied
A slice of my country as Blake and many other poets have before me.

What is it
This Albion?
Avalon, maker of myths
Keeper of the ancient
The holder of the heart.
Even when you
Were a pirate
Spreading borders
Far and wide
Taking what you wanted
Before leaving
It behind
You made friends,
Even those you sought to quell
And became
A multi-layered
Melting pot
With many tales to tell.
Do not let me down
You have wit
A style and majesty
A wistful grace
That brings me back
To your rich green
Postcard landscape
A picture
That includes me
And welcomes
All who call you home
As your children.
My England
Is no place
For battle hymns
Or banners,
Mean spirits
People haters
Political or religious agitators
Whatever the colour,
Sister and brother
My honest to goodness,
Home grown
Best of British
