The Keep~by Paul F. Lenzi

The Keep

untitled

Photo Prompt

impregnable tower

a spiraling rise

from the common

paved flags trod by

toiling rabbles

of vassals

in birthright of

servitude

steps leading

higher and higher

past crossbow

embrasures

designed to defend

against fools

who would dare

usurp feudal

dominion

the topmost stair

opening onto a

soft furnished

stone-finished salon

where a virginal

princess awaits

her betrothed

virile prince bound

to honor political

promise when finally

acceding his throne

to come over

the warrior sea

and lay claim to her

dowry her father’s

own fiefdom and

make her his dutiful

foreigner queen

(Prompted by Sue Vincent’s “Daily Echo” post)

Btw that staircase looks like it’s from the Wallace Monument.
