An Elderly Child

“Abstract Head Life & Death” by Alexei Jawlensky

unkindness of years

overtakes his light spirit

too long at his toils

left weakened and weary

a master no longer

returned to plebeian

beginnings an elderly child

in course of his endings

descends to dependency

mountaintop granite

reduced to low gravel

necrotic felled stones

in a slurry of bones

without stature or use

without vigor of youth

in this living for dying

death lives in his eyes
