My Father’s Guidance~by Karen King

My Father’s Guidance

Old Spice wafted between us,
Following us to the garage,
Confirming our choice
Whilst my Father guided us on.
No money for bills, shopping.
Paying for a car I didn’t need,
Paying for a car I didn’t want.
Take your pick,
An electronic handbrake that slides
Down a drop to the garden below
Or sinisterly towards the sea.
Perhaps you would prefer
Cheap tyres that slide along the road?
Or, maybe, a car the ambles around,
Not knowing where it is going?
No, it is time to belt up!
No, it is time to wisen up!
My Peugeot 308 will be sold
And a Suzuki Swift will drive
Into my life.
Smaller, lighter, livelier,
A “proper” handbrake
And decent tyres.
A car that knows where it’s going.
A car that can get me back on track
And steer me in the right direction.
