Gridiron~by Paul F. Lenzi

Gridiron

foot

“4th and 1” by Robert Joyner

testosterone madness released

flooding glands with raw power

adrenaline surging to frenzy

hard musculature trained and tuned

for deft managed aggressions

in ritual war of the weekend arena

each nerve bristling fiercely

all senses acute with a readiness

bodies propelled by a violent grace

crack of helmets and shoulder-pads

echo like gunshots the thundering

drumbeats of bone against bone

drawing frigid fanatical cheers from

the lungs of an energized crowd

all the animal human imperatives

full-on display chasing visceral trophies

the blood and guts glory of triumph

in barely conceivable civilized mayhem

I love it oh God how I love it
