Daily missive for Tuesday the 11th of April.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Tuesday the 11th of April.

Nothing is left in the well
Dry as a bone
Only hollows
Weathered high water marks
And tinder shadows
Dancing in the moonlight
Hoping to catch fire
Rage out of control
Until the anger dies.
Even hermit crabs
Outgrow their home
Leave their shell for a larger one
Not that it stays empty for long
An endless chain
Happening time and time again.
What of the dry stone wall
Almost a clean slate
On which to scrawl
The senseless lack of it all.
If there were words enough
To festoon the world
Decorate it with empty shells
And snake skin
Construct a tenement building
With single occupancy
Designer units
Until the rains fall
Washing them all away
In a wave of nostalgia
For a time of plenty
When the well was
Filled with the water of life
A redemptive song
A poetic reduction
Of liquid soul.
Listen for lullabies
On the wing
They escape from the dark
In the hope of a skylark
Then fall as new morn dew
On a verdant blanket
Of paradise
Dwell beneath the veil
Until it lifts
And at last disperse
In the mist of a simple verse.
