Prompt tribute to Robert Browning~by Sudeshna Mukherjee

Prompt tribute to Robert Browning

Tribute to Robert Browning
A poet who had chronicled
Powerful men with plan diabolical
To throw light on their misdeeds
Much before society accepted their creeds
As it happened far between
Emotional escalation too keen
Yet it happened only to be swept under
But the poet recounted each blunder
Whether Porphyria or The Last Duchess
All pawns in aristocratic game of chess
Their fault being loving and guileless
Their fate they were so clueless.

Why does it seem so familiar
The same leer and the same behaviour
So many Porphyrias strangled by their lock
So many Duchess’ framed on the wall of time’s clock
‘God is in his heaven -All’s right with the world’
Isn’t it always ‘her’ who bears the brunt and the curl .
