Daily missive breaks into the weekend Sunday the 28th of May.~ The waiting room.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive breaks into the weekend Sunday the 28th of May.
The waiting room.

You think you know
Because you were there
As he stumbled
When the nurse came
With a soft smile.
She took his arm
Led him
Through the wooden door
Into the darkened room
His feet barely
Touching the floor
He was so light headed
Fingers curled tight
Around the door jamb
Bloodless
White knuckles
Stiff and swollen.
A belt and braces man
He scarcely filled his clothes
Baggy trousers
Hanging lower
With every reluctant step
He was almost gone
To nothing
Before vanishing
Into the void.
Perhaps it is what
You feared
When they asked you
To wait
And you sat down
Awaiting the call.
You think you will know
What to do
When the news comes
But your heart
Is a different drum
It beats
Even as the music
Comes to an end
You think you know
But you don’t.
