forgiveness~by Ayoola Goodness Olanrewaju

forgiveness

forgiveness

i kneel before my eyes. singeing into
an admixture:

light.
questions.
& survival.

this kind of chemistry kills me.

does it kill you too?

there are too many lies in a truth. my country is
sick. sinking. & the stink is indelible.

i am folding the fire in my face.
perhaps. for this seven times seventy times. & countless.

i will be brave again. & say

i forgive my country. & baptize in love.

but these eyes are too honest. too honest to lie.
too honest to feign forgiveness. they live the pain.
the wrath. cutting keen. keen. & there is always

something new not to forget.

does it not get too late? or how many
miles more do we need walk in faith? for this fate fading
at every wake of a new mourning.

for strength after the batteries of weakness. to climb &
hang our voice on the zenith of liberty.

& when you remember this country again. you
see our stupidity. how deficient the thumb is. a useless
god trusted to divine the oracle of fate.

for bread. we break. smithereens for our children. we
are not enough. our lord in london

is too done for to answer prayers. and change
is another way to say

chains.

i am folding the fire in my face.
perhaps. for this seven times seventy times. & countless.

i will be brave again. & say

i forgive my country. & baptize in love.

these eyes are too honest.

can i forgive this country?
