Daily missive for Monday the 24th of July.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Monday the 24th of July.

The neighbours,
Two old folk
With laughter as
Stretched as their skin
Over exposed to the sun
Dry and yellowed
With age
Move in synchronous
Pottering together
In and out
Of the garden shed
Weeding the bedding plants
Watering the hanging baskets
Barely speaking
Each other
Working hand in glove
A carpet slipper
Soft shoe shuffle
Legs not what they were
Nothing too strenuous
But time is consumed
In constructive harmony.
I rummage through
Old sketch pads
French phrase books
Pictures of butterflies
Hindu elephant gods
That were
Practice for a painting
A floor plan for the garden
I remember
When we discussed it.
I potter
Alone with my thoughts
In reclusive singularity
Relative seclusion
Is too vague
A notion to pin
A name to
But in a pause
Before feeling is fully
I catch a breath.
How did it evolve
This eccentricity
Of nostalgia
A momentary flush
Of distractibility
On a grey day
As I wander
In aimless musing
Through the harbour
Of our lives
Missing you
Missing me
Missing what we used to be.
