Daily missive for Friday the 28th of July.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Friday the 28th of July.

Old men
And lonely hearts
Universal survivors
With dampened spirits
Draped in
Lightweight polyester
Clutter the café
Broken umbrellas
With frills
Dry out on the floor
Some wait in a stand
By the door
Where wet coats hang
Together
Like old friends
Third age travellers
Shuffle to tills
With a bill
For a cream tea
Struggling to pay
Whilst juggling a tray
Dropping a handful of coins
Too small to see
Even for me
But pennies don’t roll too far
These days
The state pension
Covers the basics
With little over for luxury
Things are not
What they used to be
In their heyday
When they put money away
For a rainy day
But it has been
Such a wet year
They were left
With bare bones
And tempted by
Short term loans
Sold their soul
To the tally man
Nothing changes
But now his business
Is transparent
Advertised as a service
A logo on a sports shirt
A promise
If you can’t pay
You will not be hurt
But the bailiffs
Will call
And if you have anything left
They will take it all.
