Daily missive for Friday the 8th of September.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Friday the 8th of September.

Nobody knows
When you eat breakfast
In a café
Buttering toast
Drinking coffee
Flicking through a magazine
Reading posts
Smiling at strangers
Young mothers with tired eyes
Bouncing babies
Uncomprehending faces
Hungry for love
Unaware of the meaning
Life may have in store
Filling their tummies
With goodies
Passing it through
Without thought
Or control
One day that will
Happen to you.
Nobody knows
As you walk alone
Stretching legs
At a healthy pace
A raised heart rate
More important
Than the comfort
Of a stroll or an amble
At this stage
Running is too much
Of a gamble
Raising the bar
More steps each day
If it was only as easy
To sip the wine
Nostalgia is best avoided
But it is a vast space
Lost in the past
In an empty place
And nobody knows
If the smile is fresh
The eyes bright
The skin clear
Beneath the veneer
You are broken
Barely floating
Almost drowning
Going down for the
Third time
Stifling a curse
At the ease
With which
Every life
Can be turned
Into something much worse
In the course of
One scarcely literate
And whether by chance
Or deliberate
Very foolish verse.
