” JACKIE ” ~by Martin Gedge

POEM ” JACKIE ” By Martin Gedge

Image may contain: 1 person, baseball

A colored league
that would intrigue
a kid up on the rise
with bat in hand
this Brooklyn brand
was out to open eyes
he took the plate
through love and hate
and learned to sacrifice
and from it all
he stood there tall
and gave baseball it’s life
he took the cheers
and turned the gears
with every single base
and knowing doubt
a tough strike out
with every pitcher faced
and in the cards
that he went yards
beyond the wooded stands
they came to love
this golden glove
just like he loved his fans
he changed the minds
of old past times
to take the field with pride
and to this day
as players play
there’s Jackie by their side
a bus outbound
to cooperstown
this heart an open flame
the 42
would slide right through
and ring the hall of fame
and when the call
let’s play some ball
your favorite baseball teams
there is a place
for every race
to find their field of dreams
