Covenants~by Scot Buffington

With heart engorged and honor-bound
pledge royal faith, these acts expound
sighed oaths sealed that virgin kiss
forever trussed, to promise this.

Thereafter, first loves’ declarations
premiered these earnest recitations
of deeds to come and wills bespoke
intent to dressing hearts, baroque.

Exchange of bands, with fingered hands
again true-sworn, decisive plans
a queen betrothed, no need for crown
nor obligatory bridal gown.

Prompt corollary, hands were tied
with fasting cord to wed the bride
Covenant’s knotting still remains
twined covalent, spirits’ chains.

Declared fealty, upon ancient steel
a gifted blade that bears a seal
the birthright name to offer up
talisman, weapon, iconic backup.

Under holy heaven’s hallowed skies
sanctified and immortalized
to swear in all ancestral rites
a lifetime filled with wedding nights.
