Daily missive for Thursday the 11th of October.~by Peter Forster

Daily missive for Thursday the 11th of October.

I just buys and sells
Carry the bags
On a dusty cart
Pulled by my grey mare
A fine old soul
With a giant heart
A few years are left in her yet
If I treats her well
It is only a bag of coal
What harm can it do
Keeps out the chill
The home fires burning
I tips it through a hatch
At the back
Empty the sack
Then move down the street
To the next house
If they can pay
Otherwise we trot on
The horse struggles
To keep his feet sometimes
Especially in winter
Or in a pea-souper
When the fog is so thick
You can cut the air
With a knife
Some days I am lucky
To make it home safe
To the wife
I have children to feed
All I do is my job
Someone has to do it
Blame the factories
For the smog
If I stopped
Taking them coal
Then they would just
Burn peat from the bog
They have nearly stripped
The old wood clean
As it is
Greedy so and so’s
No feel for the land
Just stretch out a
Baby soft hand
And take take take
They are all on the make
Make make
You see
All but me
I’m just making a living
Doing my daily round
Two bags of coal
For less than a pound
A bargain it is
Gov’nor
Make no mistake
