Knowing America through Poetry

Right in the heart of the Appalachian Highlands
It is nicknamed~~ The Mountain State.
Peace treaties forced the Cherokee and
Iroquois out of West Virginia in 1768.

The residents are called~~ West Virginians.
The motto is~~ “Mountaineers are always free.”
The official state bird is the cardinal
And the sugar maple is the state tree.

Bailey Brown, the first Union soldier
Killed in the Civil War.
And Chester Merriman of Romney
Fought in World War 1~~ his age ten plus four!

The state flower is the rhododendron
And the official animal is the black bear.
Nearly 75% of the state is forest and the
State gem is the fossil coral that is found there.

The first federal prison exclusively for
Women created much attention.
And in Jackson’s Mill, Charles H Hartley
Formed the first 4-H camp in the nation.

In Webster Springs is the world’s
Largest Sycamore tree that is displayed.
And in Charleston in 1870 the first
Brick street in the world was laid.

The longest steel arch bridge in the world
Once a year it is closed for celebration.
The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville
Is the second highest steel arch in the nation.

At seven-teen hundred feet across and
Eight hundred and seventy-six straight down.
The road is closed for Bridge Day as one-hundred
Thousand people converge on this small town.

It is West Virginia’s largest day event
From sun up until sun down.
As they parachute and bungee jump
From the bridge down to the ground.

Pearl Buck and the lovable Don Knotts.

Capital is Charleston
